Narrative Series Downtown Los Angeles: Leo

Ancestry. It doesn't have to do with the color of my skin as much as it has to do with being an artist. It has everything to do with what I'm about. I'm a Christian, and there's an ancestry to that. I'm an artist, and there's an ancestry to that. It forms how hard I want to go because I know that someone else came before me that made it possible for me to stand in this studio right now. That is not something that is always able to happen. There is a spirit and an energy to that. I want to do right by that, this is bigger than me because I will be someone else's ancestry. I think that's the way the world moves, why the spirit moves and energy flows...it doesn't stop, it keeps going - Leo

I hosted an all day portrait session as part of a personal project called the Narrative Series. Eight different people responded, and all I asked for in exchange was their story. No one was really sure what would happen, I just knew I wanted to connect with people on a deeper level.

Leo came in to the studio with an energy and a purpose that was palpable. He had really thought about what he wanted to say, and how he wanted to visually express those ideas. He brought in three different outfits with themes for each one: Ancestry, Hedonism, Culturist. His openness and wisdom within each theme had a breadth and depth I really enjoyed conversing about and photographing.

Leo is definitely someone to watch, and I'm really excited where his art will take him. Here are a few links to some of his work:

"Being creative. I think it's different than the 9-5 because it affects culture. People remember a song they heard, or a movie they saw. People remember how they felt, not how they punch the clock. I'm not saying it's better or more important, but it's different. It's the fabric of the country. These things are taught to generations of people. I think the outcome or goal for me is peace and understanding... and if I can help people to understand a different side of something. I believe everything can be resolved through a conversation. I think that's what culture does. You can say 'they do x y z because of their culture.' Culture helps you understand a person. I think the goal of interpreting a culture is understanding. Now maybe that's where being black does come into play, because what does the world think my culture is?"

"Current race relations. I think the whole motivation of how far we have come, was the attempt to be one as a human race. Black and white is not a race, it is a skin color. Human is a race. I think it used to be black and white... I'm a man you're a woman, I'm rich you're poor... it was clear to us. Now we have so many differences, and I think we are in this weird place where instead of us being one, we are yelling about those differences and not our similarities, which is what I think needs to change."

"While I'm an ancestrian, I am also non-traditional, and that kind of makes me an outlaw. The path was made before me, but I have to do my own thing with the path. I can't do what everybody else has done, that's not change. As a people grow and experience new things, as a human race moves along, things get different. People are different. Now you can be what you want to be, and 20 years from now I don't want someone doing the same thing I did. Think about all the things that people did that nobody got, but they get it now because of the culture. I want people to reach a level of understanding. Judge me by my character... but I think there is a connotation on judgement rather than understanding. I think it should be understand me for my character"
